Belize - An Introduction

Belize was known as British Honduras until1973. It is the only country in part of Central America where official language is English. Belize has lowest population in Central American Region and also lowest in the world. Belize is a member country of Commonwealth of Nations.

The Queen of Belize, Elizabeth II is the Head Of The State. Governor General represents the queen. The Government of Belize is parliamentary democracy; prime minister is the head of the government and active advisor of Governor General. The Parliament of Belize is bicameral, the national assembly comprises of a House of Representative and a Senate. Belize is a member of CARICOM (Caribbean Community).

The Belize administration is divided into 6 districts- Belize District, Cayo District, Corozal District, Orange Walk District, Stann Creek District, Toledo District. These districts further divided into 31 constituencies. The geographical features of Belize are highly diverse; the southern part has Maya Mountain ranges, the northern part is mostly flat and heavily forested. The greatest feature of Belize is rivers- two rivers Hondo and Sarastoon flows along its boundary, and Belize River flows across the center of the country. The Doyle's Delight is highest point in Belize. The climate in Belize is hot and humid. Belize receives good rainfall between May to November. Hurricanes and floods are very common here.

The economy of Belize depends on agriculture, agro-based industry, tourism and construction. Sugar is the main crop accountable for nearly half of the export. The largest manpower in Belize works in Banana industry. Citrus industry along with hummingbird highway is a main industry. Recently discovered petroleum deposits may turn the fate of Belize’s economy in coming decades. It’s estimated through different studies that approximately one-third people in Belize are unemployed. The government in Belize is trying hard to eradicate unemployment and poverty.
